Warhammer Escalation League Pt.3

This is makes the last installment for my mini-league as we played out the last game on Thursday. The list were bumped up to 1250 and my Elves were struggling to make the jump. All I had left to add for units, were some lame Silver Helms. The moment, I set foot in the store, I realized that my efforts were in all vain. My competitors had shown up with strong units like Hydras, Giants, Minotaurs and all sorts of stuff.

Ya, know.... stuff that helps wins games.

This will be the very last time I show up at competitive event and try to play with a fluff army.  No more of that bullshit for me! I'm showing up with a entirely painted army, comprised of the best units that I can take. The Lizardman army featured in the pictures had a Old blood, Scar-veteran, Skink Priest, and don't forget the Steggie.

I'd like to say this game was fun, but it simply wasn't...

Okay, we will try this again. After a bit of an oversight on my part. I had to revise the list a little. I added two more skinks to the scout units and  two more magic items to the Slann. One was the Banner of Discipline, as suggested by Nuclear.... Thank you, sir.

The other was the Bane Head. I saw in the Lizzie F.A.Q, that the Miscast wounds are doubled by the curse. So, if I bump off a Miscast with my cup, the said Wizard will take double wounds, if any from the chart. It's not a game winning strategy, but it will give the other guy something to think about.

I'm also trying to make up some spell counter to help me remember all that stuff. If I get 'em done in time, I'll try to post them up.

I know, I know.... this list is for 'ard boyz? You must be asking yourself.... "Where's the Cheese?"
No, this list does not contain a double Slann. Nor, is it a Stegga-stampede. It's a nice balanced list with all the units that I am comfortable playing with. I won't lie, there are a few things I'd like to change, but funds and time are an issue right now.  It may be 'ard boyz and all, but I'm not going field unpainted minis just to win a silly tourney game.

Once you start down the dark path of unpainted minis, forever will they dominate your destiny.........

Warhammer and Half

Mr. Dan went got himself a huge ole’ army of hungry, hungry Ogres. Naturally, Mr. Dan wants to field his new toys, but he has never played Warhammer before. So, to learn the rules for 7th edition right now would be rather silly.

Instead, I dug up some of the major changes to new edition, and integrated them into the current rule set. Lots of stuff works different according to the rumors, so I kept it simple and just worked in the new 2d6 charge+move, striking at initiative, extra ranks/attacks, and +1 ScR. for charging. We also tried out the new fear/terror rules, but they didn’t have much effect on the game. Lizard folk are cold-blooded...'ya know.

Just some random thoughts:

Depth of field.
I'm not sure, that I can properly express how the table feels now. That 24" between armies is not what it used to be. The long walk across the board for most units has turn into a very shallow battlefield. My normal plan of “March everything” would have put my units inside the new threat range from the starting line. After the 1st turns had passed the possibilities for a charge was everywhere. All you needed is some lucky dice to get the big jump. Some of the more shooty armies are going to lose a round of fire, but it’s rumored that they get to fire in 2 ranks, so maybe it will balance out.

Random Charges.
Well, I can tell you it sucks to roll “double 1” for your charge roll. What would have been a normally been a charge for my Stegga-hero fell short thanks to the dice. This left him open to a counter-charge the next round, and being chased around the rest of the game. I can’t say how I really feel about the subject  yet, as we’re using some hybrid-rules and having a friendly game.

Combat
Dice were flying everywhere and it made combat very bloody. It felt like more the unit was participating in the fight. More attacks, mean more wounds, but you have to remember this a game of chance. Dice will still roll crappy no matter how many you roll. We had a few tied combats settled by the musicians and roll offs. My warrior are slow, so very slow. I may as well get comfortable to the idea of always striking last.

Mr. Dan said he had a good time, and for a 1st game that's a must. I’m just amazed to see how just a few changes made the game feel entirely different.

Warhammer Whining

Let’s see... the pictures of the Orky War-machines turned out rather poorly. So, I’m going to give it a second try latter on today.  Instead, I will use the Internet for it’s most divine and true purpose... to complain. Here’s my list for Warhammer the 8th Edition.

Where’s the “news” on the new starter set?
It may be my memory failing once again, but I swear, we had more concrete info when 40k was switching over.  We have all sorts of rumors, but  GW. is still holding out! Is there even a release date for the box? Where are my pictures of cool new minis?

As it stands, my two present armies are curse words in certain circles. I’d like to start a third one, so I can play a game with-out getting flack. Here's to hoping, that one of factions will be opponent friendly.

Where are my leaked rules?
This is what’s going to hurt 8th the most by chasing away old players. It is my opinion, that the leaked PDF for 40k 5th edition, gave everyone a long adjustment period to the new system. This time let everyone get comfortable with the new changes and kept the general interest during  the transition.

This time, all we have is rumors... solid ones, but the past few months of uncertainty  hurts the game. We should all be playing 7.5 right now, and trumpeting up momentum for the new edition.

Karl Franz doesn’t like waffles?!?!
I don't know if that is true or not, but it's fun to say.

That’s all I got. I’m looking  forward to the new edition, but I really do believe that they could have gone about it in a better fashion. If they want to copy the success of 40k? Games Workshop should  follow the same pattern that helped the game succeed.

Battle for the New Year! (1800 WE vs LM)

Check out these pics from our game last night! It was pretty fun with a little craziness abounding. Larry pulled off a well-deserved win with multiple devastating comet spells; one of them popped @ the bottom of the first turn.. (it incinerated 7/10 glade guard and made the other 3 run!)

My forest dragon did pretty well but I think I'm going to invest in Oaken Armour so my Highborn stops dying so much. I can't complain though, Larry skillfully rolled 11(!) impact hits on a flank charge and my High Noble took quite a few of them and died before combat that round. Guess I'll watch out for that from now on..

Overrall I was pretty happy with how much I did manage to kill despite a few devastating magic phases from Larry. His war of attrition approach to the game ended up working out for him. With so many bodies it was hard for me to really dent his force. Cold-blooded worked to his advantage quite a few times.

You might see a few units pictured that I haven't featured in their own posts yet. I decided to make a cheap DIY lightbox and haven't gotten around to it yet. Expect higher quality pics soon!

Terradon Pictures

Sorry bout the pic's... they're not the best. These are, however, some of my favorite models in the range. It took me forever to get all three together. Ya have that sometimes. I've played two games with the unit so far.

Not so good, but the 20" move adds some speed to my slow-moving blocks of infantry. I'm sure over time I'll get the hang of the them. Hopefully in the future, I'll get hold of the hero guy and add a little punch. I know units like this have a lot of potential on the battlefield, with tactics like march blocking or surprise flank charges. (Not to mention droppin' rocks on yer head.)

Lizardmen

Well for a first post, we'll have to start of with some Saurus. Whats not to like about these cold-blooded warriors? With a strength and toughness 4 and 2 attacks, for 11 points they act like most armies elite soldiers. The models themselves are easy to paint with a lot of texture all over. They are nice change of pace from your standard fantasy figs. I still have to finish the shields in the back ranks. Then the unit will be complete.

Dino-Death Star o' Doom

Well, it's done. I pulled a major constuction goof and put the howdah on backwards. After that blunder and some creative clipping... it fits. Oh well, not a whole lot you can do about it after the glue drys. So very excited to put this monster on the table! Chase down and run over some Tree-men or what ever poor Wood Elf that gets in the way. It should act as hammer and take some of the bow-fire off my other Steggie. Now, all I got to do is... fix that shield with some purple wash and make a army list.

Terrodons N' Stuff

Yesterday, finished up the work on the evil Dino-Death Star along with it's crew. The few pics I snapped last night were all blurry... so it will have to wait. I had to go back and do some touch-up work on my Terrodons. One of them had an issue with the floor.

Gravity sucks.Today's bit of work will be finishing the basing on Temple guard and few other units need some work in that department. I just may stick with my lizards till the end of the month. A painted Carnosaur would make me smile. Get some Spiky Lizards and shoot up the Wood Elves for a change.

Painters block...

The blog has been a little neglected of the past month or so due to life and wonderful stress that it is... so it goes. However, I've been slowly working on my lizard-men army until can figure out what 40k project is next. I should be a good Hobbyist and finish my Hrud army. I could have all the detail and basing done in a week. If I could only get motivated... I will say one thing, the temple guard models are some the most detailed plastic kits, I've ever painted. Straps, Shrunken heads, and spikes everywhere. I've got all the base coats down. It's just a matter of the clean up work.

Flying Circus...

Okay I won't lie... The paint brush has been kind of all over the past few days. This never bothers me much. As long as the Paint is flowing it will add up in the end. My progress on the Flying Dino Unit is slow. They are bit of pain to assemble, but after some patience and allot of glue we have them all put together. Fiddlely Things....

So during the glue and frustration, I picked up the wave serpent again. In a vain attempt to correct the failed "Rubber-band Experiment." I put some more work on the model. I Don't like it, but when I compare it to the Falcon. It's all right...there's always simple green, but repainting the whole thing just is not happening right now.

Shifting Gears...

Sometime in the near future, I'll post up the 1,000 Pts. Space Marine list along with a little family photo of everything that I ended up painting for the project. Right now, i'm taking them on a few test runs to see how they fair on the table top. Results have been mixed, so wish me luck...

Meanwhile.... Wanna see my Lizard men? I spent the weekend finishing up the Skinks and touching up any damage on some of the older paint. As a added bonus... I found the time to break my second Dinosaur off the sprue. The Evil and cheesy Death-star Dino is on the way....

This army was to be my second project on the blog after the The Eldar army, but I got distracted by my squid-men. Mr. Zealot has begun work on his tree-huggers... so i thought, what a better time to finish off what's left of the army. I promise to return to the 40k. end of things soon. It's just a question what to do when we get back.

Kermit the space frog

I was hope'n that I'd get a game in this week, but it did not happen...Oh well. Instead i just fooled around on the detail work on Fate Weaver and slaped a little paint on frog boy.

April 11, 2009

Smash 'em!

I have run into a bit of a problem. Should have seen it commin'. Kermit the Space Frog is pure metal. No way... will that plastic stand work. It will break in a heart beat. So, I just wonder off to the garage to find a better stand. With this little set back... came the realization of two things. One, I do not have enough shields for my warriors. Two, the temple guards shields are molded to the arms.

So far, not that I've put a lot of Fantasy models together, but these have been separate form the arms of the models. I'm going to have to ponder on this while I put my skinks together.

Mean while.... These guys.

I'm going to build a command unit out of the left over Steggie crew bits. Still have one more of those monsters sitting in a box. Just add to the list.

March 26, 2009

Hey Kermmit....!

Well just small update on the progress of the past day.... I now officially hate guardians forever. It dawn on me while putting them together that I'll probably never play this army. I can think of 3 chaps off hand would jump at the chance... but I'm more of a hoard player when it comes to 40k. Oh well.... next up is the Mage priest from the lizards. I love the model...always have... a Dead mummified frog from space... says paint me.

Rawwggh...III

Down to the detail work and basing....so it's going to have to wait awhile till the hand heals. What a monster of a model... Allot of work but it was worth it.
